Teaching Them Young: The DO's and DONT's of Teaching Kids How to Save Money

Hello there guys? How's your week so far? Mine is okay so far except that half of our laboratory is being demolished. Dust and dirt are everywhere, which makes me which we have the best stick vacuum to clean up all these mess. But it's okay because I still be able to do my work despite limited space.

Anyway, today let me share another great article on teaching our kids to save money. If you find my post about  Ways to Teach Our Kids to Save Money helpful, then this is a must read too.

saving money, kids, money tips, financial tips

More than a year ago, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas launched a financial literacy campaign that targeted kids as young as six years old. The endeavor called Banking on Your Future, aims to start kids early on the path of savings, teach them the value of putting money in the bank, and eventually, create future generations of money-savvy adults. In partnership with the country's biggest banking institutions and the Department of Education, Banking on Your Future allows parents to open up account for kids with a minimum deposit as low as PHP 100.00.

Since there are programs like this that teach awareness to kids to become future savers, as parents how can you help them see the importance of saving money?

Teach them the value of saving by giving concrete examples
It’s easy to tell stories to your kids to imply the significance of savings, however its better if they can see a real life example. For instance, you're running low on money for food, you can share to your kids the importance of having a savings account during tight times. Realistic scenarios will have more bearing on them as opposed to concocting stories about saving.

Include them in the process of saving
Nothing beats the power of engagement when it comes to teaching your kids on how to save money.  It pays to include them in the process, instead of just telling them that you’re saving for their future let them be involve in the process.  Take them on occasional trip to the banks and let them experience on how depositing money works. After all, the bigger goal of the whole activity is teaching them the habit of saving money, not just to make an account under their name.

Hide your financial problems from them
Teaching your kids something is more than just telling about butterflies and rainbows; at times, you have to share tragedies as well as cautionary tales in the process to make sure that lessons will have a great impression in them. If you want your kids to fully understand the gravity of having a savings account, let them know the financial hardships of the family and how savings account play an important role in that. Let them know that it affects them as well, and that they will remember those lessons very well.

Take away their choice to save or spend
The problem with some parents is that they coerce their kids into saving, a very dangerous act that may deviate them from what they actually intend to teach them. To make sure that saving will be a conscious choice rather than a mandate, let them know that the money you are giving them can either go to the bank or can go to unnecessary expenses. If they start to save out of their own free will, then you are successful in imbibing them a sense of financial responsibility by saving money.

There are many ways you can let your child save money, but the main point would be the habit of saving money should always go over the money itself. When they grow up, they will have this invaluable lesson that not even money can buy.

#SAHM for 4 Days and Some Realizations

Today is the 2nd day that I am back at work. For 4 days, I stayed at home to take care of my mother and my son. For me, it’s not a sacrifice because I love them both.

Although, my heart is filled with worries I trust God that this happens for a reason. Our househelp left us so soon without prior notice. She left us hanging but I decided not to about her because she doesn't deserve a space here. I was very disappointed but I still wish her well.

I look at this experience as a chance to be with the two important people in my life. My son was so excited when he learned I am the one who will accompany him to his school, which by the way are just few steps from our home.

For the longest time, I am not really into house chores. From day 1 of being a stay at home mom (for a while), I cook for the four us and do the dishes as well. I clean the house, wash our clothes and bathe Matt and Nanay. I am also the one who make accompany and fetch Matt from school. I fed them and see to it he and Nanay will take their nap. After that, I prepare their merienda.

God is telling me something...

Time check, it's 4:07 pm. Finally, I am done with all the chores. Would you believe that I started working at 6 in the morning? Yes, that long. And yes, we have no househelp again.

Now I feel that God is telling me something, Is this already a sign that I have been waiting for? I am emotionally not okay now. I need some good vibes now. And I am so thankful with this little boy.

The Secret to A Long-Lasting Relationship

Because it's Love Month and I get inspired with Ate Farida's article on Modern Filipina: 10 Couples Share the Secrets to Their Long-Lasting Love, I'll share our secret too.

This July, we will celebrate our 7th year of marriage, but our relationship will be 12 years na. Still far from celebrating silver anniversary but with God's will we'll be together even beyond our golden anniversary. So what's the secret of long-lasting love? Let me share ours.

Aside from having a lot of patience, understanding and love, and open communication, here are our secret of a long-lasting relationship.

One goal in life. I think this is important in any relationship. Having one goal let us walk in the same direction. Though there are still some issues we don't agree with, the bottom line is we reconcile for our one goal in life.

Inspire each other. Let be an inspiration to each other. To be a better person and to have a better self. A better self, means a better you. And being a better you, you become a better partner as well.

Support and motivate each other. During the early years of our relationship, Daddy was struggling to prove his self. There was a time he thought I underestimate his capability by constantly reminding him what he should do. But the truth, I just want him to succeed without knowing I was already stepping on his pride. When I realized that I was not helping him, I let him do what he think is right. I support and motivate him instead. He did succeed and I am always proud of him.

Believe and trust each other. Sometimes this is not easy especially once the trust is broken but if you truly love each other everything is possible.

Share same interest or passion. We are lucky that both of us loves blogging, cooking, crafts and crocheting. We may not often go out, just the two of us, but spending time together doing what we love both serves as our bonding time.

Time for each other. We always find time to have fun and enjoy every minute of being together. I think this is one of the problems why a relationship is falling apart. For a Mom like me, we prioritize our children to the point that we already ignoring the needs of our husband. I am not saying to be less of a mother, the point is we forget that before we have our kids, we have our husband's first. Before we become a mother, we are a wife first. Our partner deserves our time as much as our kids do.

God is in our center. Above everything else, we put God in the center of our relationship. We entrust everything to Him. When we encounter problems and difficulties, we always ask for strength from Him. When we are receiving so much blessings we never forget to thank Him. Through the years, we learn to trust Him for all His plans. We keep our strong faith and believe everything will be alright because He is with us, within us and in our center.

Remember that every relationship has its ups and downs. Time may come that both of you can't fix the relationship anymore. If the love is still there, don't be afraid or ashamed to seek help. If you can't confide to your relatives or friends, you may enter a couple therapy. Good thing is online marriage counselling is now available if you feel awkward to go to their clinics.

Anyway, we still have a long way to go. Our relationship is not perfect. Trials will come and go. There are times we were tested, that time I want to give up. But I choose not to because I trust God that He gave me the right man worth loving and fighting for.

The two of us, we just don't love each other, we take care of each other. We just don't understand each other, we believe in each other and we have a strong faith in God. That's the secret, the two of us and God in our center. Nothing is impossible to God.

To my best half, Daddy Allan, happy hearts day mahal. Like what I am always saying, I can't imagine anyone in your place. I am always thankful and blessed because God gave me you. I love you soooo much!

Hey, I know you have your stories too. Please share through the comment box and I will love to read your stories too.

Advance Happy Valentine's day!
