5 Fascinating Specialties Med Students Should Consider

1. Internal Medicine

This specialty requires a broad range of knowledge. They concentrate on disorders and diseases affecting the digestive, respiratory, vascular, musculoskeletal, renal and cardiovascular systems. Internists treat blood disorders as well. They also know how psychological health is linked to physical health.

2. Genetics

Medical geneticists can work in various settings. Some work in labs where they research genes that produce molecules, such as Surfactant protein C, that are related to genetic disorders. Other medical geneticists work directly with private and hospital physicians to diagnose genetic disorders.

3. Neurology

As the name implies, neurologists specialize in the nervous system. Therefore, they diagnose and treat issues with the spine, brain, nerves and blood vessels. This includes brain infections like meningitis and disorders like Alzheimer's, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.

4. Radiology

Radiologists use imaging methods like MRIs and ultrasounds to examine someone for suspected disorders and injuries. They may also treat cancer patients with radiation therapy. Radiologists can choose to specialize in certain areas of the body like the heart, lungs, breasts, brain or digestive system. Some radiologists work only with children or in emergency departments.

5. Pathology

Pathologists focus on analyzing diseases. They perform tests on bodily materials, like blood and tissue samples, to check for specific diseases. They may work primarily with internists and surgeons in hospitals to assist in diagnosing patients. Some narrow their concentration even further and work only with specialists like dermatologists or gynecologists.

Pathologists can also find work outside of the medical field as forensic pathologists. These specialists are very important to the criminal justice system. They are in charge of examining bodies to determine the causes of suspicious deaths.

Pru Life UK advances financial literacy for Filipino families with Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home webinar

Have you joined the "Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home: Financial Literacy Basics for Filipino Families" webinar last September 12? Naku I missed it because of unforseen event. Sayang! But don't worry, kung na-missed nyo din, I will be sharing the  post-event press release and photos.

From the Press Release Kit:

Pru Life UK recently hosted the latest PRUWise webinar, entitled Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home: Financial Literacy Basics for Filipino Families. The expert-led and fun-filled webinar aimed to teach both parents and children the building blocks of a solid financial future.

Host MJ Pangan invites participants and their kids to take part in the fun, virtual games on financial literacy.

The webinar was hosted by children’s show TV personality Tonipet Gaba and Pru Life UK’s Mary Jane Pangan. It featured education and finance experts Dr. Queena Lee-Chua and Dr. Mary Joy Abaquin, who shared their insights on how parents can raise money-smart children at home. Almost 700 parents and children from around and beyond the Philippines joined the virtual event.

Host Tonipet Gaba encourages parents to tune in to one of the webinar’s topic experts, Multiple Intelligence International School (MIIS) Founder and Directress Dr. Mary Joy Abaquin.

“Pru Life UK’s advocacy of financial literacy applies to kids as much as it does to parents. We introduced the Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home webinar because we believe in starting the journey to financial wellness at a young age. It provided an avenue for parents to teach their kids essential life skills like money management in an engaging way,” says Pru Life UK Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Marketing Officer Allan Tumbaga.

Multi-awarded Ateneo professor and author Dr. Lee-Chua shared tips on how to introduce money concepts to kids. She advised parents to do frequent activities with their kids, from teaching them how much things are and where money comes from. She also encouraged parents to normalize lessons about monthly bills, exchange rates, or distinguishing between needs and wants when kids are older. According to her, "Parents and teachers are the best role models. If we don't practice what we preach, it will be absorbed by our kids."

Ateneo Professor and Author Dr. Queena Lee-Chua shares strategies for parents to introduce money concepts to kids.

Complementing her talk was the discussion led by Dr. Abaquin, author and founding directress of the Multiple Intelligence International School. She guided parents through the concepts of financial and fiscal responsibility, saving and investing, and responsible consumerism by making smart spending choices.

“Financial freedom is a mental, emotional, and educational process that all of us have to go through. As parents and teachers let us take an active part in giving our kids this lifelong gift,” she said.

Multiple Intelligence International School founding directress and author Dr. Mary Joy Abaquin discusses insights on instilling the financial growth mindset to children.

The Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home webinar also featured exciting games for kids aged seven to 12 years old about money management. The activities were designed to be an engaging way for children to value money and be careful with their allowance.

Participants estimated the correct cost of school supplies in Guess the Price, while they determined if an item is a necessity in Need or Want? The games were based on existing Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home modules. Game winners received P500 gift cards and exclusive Cha-Ching comics, while one lucky attendee won a brand-new tablet to aid in their home schooling.

“We are happy to supplement the Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home online resources, an initiative developed by Prudence Foundation – the community investment arm of Prudential in Asia and Africa – following its launch last June. The webinar, also done in partnership with Junior Achievement Philippines, reinforces our We DO Education promise, where we aim to teach Filipinos to be money smart. Previously, we worked with schools and institutions to promote financial literacy. Our new work from home setup has pushed us to pivot to digital and give parents an active role in their child’s education with simple yet quality resources,” shares Tumbaga.

“Financial literacy may be an intimidating topic for both parents and children. This motivated us to develop easy resources for parents to teach and facilitate, and at the same time, make learning fun and enjoyable for kids. Our modules are free and available online for everyone to access,” ends Prudence Foundation Executive Director Marc Fancy.

Prudence Foundation Executive Director Mark Fancy opens the webinar with an overview of the Cha-Ching program.

Parents can view online or print out the Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home modules, including parent guides and daily challenges that teach their children the four basic money management concepts– Earn, Save, Spend, and Donate. Modules come with hands-on activities, and music video links. Access the modules at www.cha-ching.com.

Hope this helps you to educate your kids to be a  money-smart kids. Till next webinar momshies!

Our 12th Anniversary

More than a month ago, we celebrated our 12th anniversary and our 17th year of being in love.

In a few months, we will be four and this is one of the best gifts we received.

To celebrate, Daddy A availed the Shakey's Home Bonding Offer. It comes with a large thin-crust pizza, four pieces Chicken ‘N’ Mojos, a Skilletti or Carbonara platter, 1.5 liter of Coke and a SuperCard+ for only P999. Makakasave daw ng P1,052!

Shakey's Home Bonding Offer

Shakey's Home Bonding Offer

We celebrated one day earlier because our anniversary fell on Monday as requested by our not so little boy.

Daddy A also bought this Red Ribbon Black Forest cake but gusto ko sana yung Peach Mango Symphony cake nila kaso waley.

My taste buds doesn't like chocolates that time pero okay na din. Happy pa din ang buntis!

Then, Daddy A surprised me with this gift set.

The next day, our anniversary day, Daddy A and I decided to order Pancit Malabon because I was craving for it. He also bought kwek-kwek, barbeque and isaw.

This is the new normal celebration now. Kami kami lang talaga. But despite this we are grateful because God keeps us safe and healthy. That's more than enough to celebrate and be thankful for.

To end this post, I would just like to thank my best half, Daddy A. Thank you for taking care of us, especially me and our baby. This pregnancy is not easy. I am worrying a lot because of the current pandemic situation. But you, our little boy and our coming baby keep me sane and strong. Thank you for loving us and for understanding my pregnancy woes. We love you always. Cheers to more years and to forever.

4 Professional Skills Caregivers Should Have

4 Professional Skills Caregivers Should Have

Not everyone can become a caregiver. Looking after the elderly requires a specific set of skills that are largely innate and cannot be taught in school. The best caregivers have the technical expertise and communication skills needed to become competent professionals. Whether they work at an assisted living facility or at home care Massachusetts, it's essential that caregivers learn these four important skills to look after their client's loved ones.

Observation

Caregivers should check their surroundings to detect safety hazards early. Several residents who require additional care have a progressive and irreversible disease known as Alzheimer's that impairs memory. Personal caregivers must be careful and take notes if they notice any behavioral changes in the residents they're looking after. Even if they notice minor changes, caregivers pay attention to every change so they can adjust their care.

Initiative

Caregivers don't depend on other medical professionals to provide them medication or help them prepare for bed. They keep track of a schedule that works for each resident and adjust to their routines. They are proactive professionals who know how to respond to emergency situations and can remain calm when a resident becomes agitated.

Cleanliness

Personal caregivers help keep the house clean by sweeping the floor and wiping the countertops. They disinfect a specific area in places where bacteria thrive. To help maintain personal hygiene, caregivers may help their clients bathe or help brush their teeth. Good caregivers provide the same care to them as they would to themselves.

Communication

The importance of communication cannot be understated. Excellent nonverbal skills will help make residents feel more comfortable and help inspire conversation. It helps to make them feel valued by talking to them, even if they do most of the talking. Lending an ear and listening to them is an invaluable skill other caregivers will respect.

Several professionals require a set of skills that help them succeed in the workplace. Like other professionals, caregivers adapt a value system that helps them complete tasks successfully and makes it easier to communicate with others.

At the Forefront of a “Perfect Storm”

Santé Barley

This pandemic has affected a lot of lives, physically, mentally and financially. But what is good about us Filipinos is our resilience. We always braved the storm that comes in our lives. Kahit ilan ulit tayo madapa, babangon at babangon tayo. Ganyan tayong Pinoy.

It's not only the ordinary people who are affected because a lot of business have struggled too. One is Santé. Sharing below how Santé is braving this storm and still providing opportunities to earn especially for those who lost their job.

From the Press Release Kit:

Like any other businesses across various industries, the health and wellness sector has struggled in coping up with the changes brought by the current pandemic. Among these businesses is Santé, an active global player in the distribution and wellness industry.

Santé Barley

Santé has always been about offering premier organic health and wellness products and services, designed to help people live better lives. With its flagship Santé Barley, the company has developed a comprehensive selection of everyday barley-based products. They are specifically made with organic pure barley from farms, as certified by BioGro, New Zealand’s leading organic certification agency.

While its business remains strong, Santé was not spared from the current pandemic situation, which, just like a storm, brought challenges that affected the way people live. The company, for instance, relies mostly on third party suppliers for some aspects of its business operations, including the supplies and logistics.

With limited mobility, especially with the community quarantine guidelines set by the authorities, even Santé’s most trusted logistics partners had extended their timetables when it comes to deliveries. And with ports being stricter, supplies from other countries also took some time to get past the borders.

Aside from supply and logistics, the company also had to cope up with other changes brought about by the much-needed responses, such as lockdowns and other safety measures, to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Braving a “Perfect Storm”

Joey Marcelo, chief executive officer of Santé, said that ever since the start of the CQs, the company understands that the health, wellness, and safety of employees, partners, customers, and other stakeholders must be on top of its priorities.

“For our employees, we immediately adopted a work-from-home setup to minimize potential exposure to COVID-19. All our employees are also assured of continued salary. There is also a fitness workout for all of us, done virtually, three-times a week. Townhalls were also conducted via video conferences,” said Marcelo.

Aside from its employees, Santé knew that its distributors and their families also rely on the company for their livelihood. This reality pushed the Santé to go digital.

“We reacted fast, making sure that our online systems are working, from our customer services to online ordering systems. Most importantly, we made sure that the top management was visible – zoom meetings were done daily – with our teams and distributors here and abroad,” Marcelo added.

Santé also has an app (IOS, Android) that allows its distributors to conveniently order products and have them shipped. They can also transact everything via Santé’s website.

After the adjustments made to navigate through the “new normal,” Marcelo said, the company is blessed to still receive growing demands despite the pandemic, referring to it as a “perfect storm.”

“Despite the current situation, our business has been a blessing to others, especially to our distributors, who we refer to as Santé Business Owners. We have been receiving a lot of positive and grateful feedback. They are happy that they have a business that is ‘pandemic-proof.’ Most of them have been working remotely from home. The pandemic may have minimized their person-to-person selling, but they just easily shifted to pure online selling and, they are all back on track,” said Marcelo.

Santé remains hopeful as they face a “perfect storm” and continue providing products like the Santé Pure Barley and Daily-C, a non-acidic sodium ascorbate supplement. These products are highly relevant and in-demand during these times. People are looking for products that would help them maintain a healthy immune system.

In May, the demand for Santé Daily-C increased by almost 1000%, Marcelo noted.

Providing Opportunities

Another opportunity for Santé brought by the ‘perfect storm’ is to provide a livelihood for those who lost their jobs or source of income amid the current situation. As of April, there are about 7.3 million unemployed Filipinos, says a report  from the Philippine Statistics Authority.

“Santé business owners are happy that they can provide for themselves and their families despite the current pandemic. And because they have their testimonies of how they thrive, they are more passionate to encourage others to join them in the direct selling business,” said Marcelo.

There are currently 10,000 active independent Santé distributors, referred to as business owners. Only half of which were active last year. By the end of the first quarter this year, Santé expects a 50% increase in the number of its business owners.

Since Santé is present in 10 key cities worldwide, distributors also earn in US dollars. They also never stop learning. With Santé’s Engage system, its distributors have easily plugged in leadership, product, and business training sessions that help equip and aid in their growth as a businessman and as a person.

Fastly adapting to the COVID-19 situation, Santé’s Engage sets of training are all accessible online and given for free.

“At Sante, we will always be open to help not just Filipinos but everyone around the world by providing opportunities, insights, and knowledge so they can continue earning even when they are at home,” added Marcelo.
