Finding a New Hobby

Hobbies are an excellent way to decompress from stressors by spending time doing what you love. Check out these four simple ways to find a pastime that fits.

Give Back

Volunteering is a great way to spend your free time. Not only will you serve your community, but volunteering is said to reduce blood pressure and lead to a longer lifespan. Analyze your passions and find a charitable cause to serve. For example, if you are gifted with young children considering volunteering at a school or children’s hospital. If construction skills are in your skillset, seek out an organization that builds homes and resources for others. Other ideas include serving at a food bank, nursing home, or animal shelter.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts can be great hobbies to get creative while letting your mind wander. Painting, sculpting, sewing, and knitting are just a few ideas. Consider browsing an online craft store to stock up on crafting needs. Plus, handmade treats make for perfect gifts and household décor. Invest time in a newfound sewing hobby to make a set of pillows or put your new paintbrushes to work to paint a small canvas for a friend.

Special Interests

Passionate about cooking? Find a local cooking class or recipe group to swap menus while meeting others. Love to read? Crack open some pages with a new book club, library group, or bookshop meeting. Other ideas include gardening clubs, bird watching teams, or art history groups. When in doubt, research your local passions online to discover local groups who share similar interests.

Get Fit

Exercise is not only a great time-filling hobby, but it offers lifelong benefits to increase both mental and physical health. Head outdoors for a walk or run, or find a fitness class that sounds appealing, such as Pilates, barre, kickboxing, or yoga. Combine fitness with friends by joining a local sports group, such as a running club or recreational adult sports team. Consider starting a co-ed sports team at your place of work to bring coworkers together with fitness.

Savor your new hobby and then share it with others!
