6 Things You Should Know About Dieting

Dieting is often a main goal at some point in life. Whether or not it is for health reasons, people consider dieting in the hopes of improving their life by losing weight or toning up. And because of that, a lot of us would often find these ‘secret’ ways to lose weight or build strong muscles. Oftentimes, people would advise you to exercise more and eat less. And while there is truth to those claims, dieting is much broader than we think. There is so much to know and you’d find that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to it.

Here are 6 things you should know about dieting.

1.    There’s a certain amount of calories you should consume in a day so you won’t starve.

Starving yourself will do you no good. While you think it will give you the results you wanted now, it can lead to a lot of problems in the future. So you need to make sure that when you are adopting a diet, you need to consume at least 1200-1500 calories per day to get enough nutrients, vitamins, and minerals in your body.

2.    You don’t necessarily have to avoid certain foods to lose weight.

There is actually no food that can cause weight gain. It’s all about how much calories you have consumed and not the restriction of certain foods. If you avoid particular foods, it may lead you to crave even more and end up eating more of it instead. For example, you don’t need to get rid of sweets all your life. You can always have sweets if you want to but the key here is moderation. If you want to lose weight, cut your food consumption instead into small portions.

3.    You don’t need to be hungry all the time to lose some weight.

When it comes to dieting, you need to make sure you don’t go hungry all the time so you can stick to a healthy diet plan. If you want to avoid eating all the time, try to choose foods instead that will make you feel full in a longer span of time. 4.    Not all supplements are not exactly proven to effectively help one’s diet.

It all depends on the person. Some people will find supplements to be effective, while others don’t. But the truth is; most supplements are not entirely proven effective. Eat healthily instead and do regular exercise.

5.    Dieting alone can help you lose weight.

Technically, if you reduce the number of calories you consume, it will lead to weight loss. But it is always a good idea to pair it with exercise to preserve your metabolism and strengthen your body.

6.    Sugar-free gums don’t exactly help in burning calories.

While these products can trigger weight loss, it’s not exactly something that will sustain it in a long time. If you really want to lose some pounds, change your diet and move your body.

It's About Time to Run!

We started by eating less carbohydrates, eating less rice. Just less because it's so hard to take off rice from our diet, hehe. I am considering brown rice but I am still contemplating because of it's price. But I think it's justifiable since it's a much healthier option if we can't take off rice from our diet.

Now, we will take a leap as finally we decided to take a RUN. Yes, I think it's about time to run. And we are determined to start it as soon as we buy our running shoes.

Gloomy Friday + My Bento Tools

Oh, it's Friday the 13th and it's pay day. It's so cloudy here and there are frequent rain showers. I love the weather now, it's cooler. Although, I can't help but fear that flood comes after the rain. Let's just all pray that may God spare our country from another disaster.

Anyway, you might notice that I have fewer posts. My mind is pre-occupied with my work, with Matt's schooling and his birthday preparation. Matt will be in school on Monday, June 16th and it's also his birthday. Daddy talked to the school personnel and they said it will just be an hour orientation. So with that, we decided not to celebrate his birthday at school. I am so sure everyone will be busy on that day e. We will have a simple celebration at home and we will just invite his new classmates na lang.

Also, finally I was able to buy my Bento tool from Bento Mommas. Here they are fresh from the pouch.

My Losing Weight Woes

I have already told you that I have started doing a workout exercise for at least 10 minutes a day. I am also into a little weight lifting (dumbbell workout). This time I am very determined to lose weight and be healthy. Want to know why? If Daddy Allan lost about 3 kilos of his body weight from his recent APE result, well I am so ashamed to announce that I gained over 3 kilos. Yeah, 3 kilos over a year and that makes me over... Oh, I prefer not to write it unless I have lost it already. Soon, I promise!

Health is Wealth: The Eatwell Plate

I have watched the news last night that our Department of Health (DOH) wants food manufacturers, including fast food chain, to have their foods properly labelled. DOH want them to indicate the calories per serving as well.

A study conducted by Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) Food and Research Institute showed that about 10 millions Filipinos are suffering from diabetes and 25 million have hypertension caused by high salt intake and obesity.

In this regard, DOH wants to create an awareness about the calories Filipinos are taking in. So this is where the eatwell plate comes in.

The Eatwell Plate
To make it simpler, here's another  healthy plate diet. This actually replace the food pyramid.

Choose My Plate
Below is the estimated calorie needs per day by age, gender and physical level.

And to guide us on what we should eat, here's a chart of the caloric values of the common Filipino foods. Images are from Food and Nutrition Research Institute. Just click on the photos to enlarge.

I have been telling Daddy about this. I told him we should start to be conscious on what we are eating. We will also train our son to eat a well-balance diet. And I promise to do even just a 30-minute cardiovascular exercise once a day.

It would be better if all Filipinos will be aware of the calories or nutritional values of the the food they eat. But because of our current economics and increasing population, a below average families will never mind the food they will eat. What matters to them is that they have something to fill into their empty stomachs.

Anyway, please expect more posts about calories here. You can also share with us your healthy experiences. Please do share, okay?

Be healthy and happy!
